Squarespace to Shopify migration

Moving a Squarespace store to Shopify means rebuilding the storefront, moving product data you have checked, and planning customers, orders and redirects on purpose. Here is when it is worth it and what we plan.

When staying on Squarespace makes sense

If any of these sound like you, fixes or a redesign on Squarespace may be the cheaper step.

  • Selling is a small part of the site and Squarespace's store covers it.
  • Your catalog is small and stable, and checkout works for your customers.
  • The reason to move is one missing feature you haven't checked for on Squarespace yet.
  • Nobody has time to check products, prices and stock before launch.

What Squarespace and Shopify allow

From each platform's own help pages, linked beside each point.

  • Squarespace's site export covers selected content, not the complete design or every feature, so the store's look and features are rebuilt on Shopify. (Squarespace Help Center)

  • Products export separately as a CSV covering physical and service products, as they stand on the day of the export. (Squarespace Help Center)

  • Shopify's Squarespace guide has you export the product CSV, edit it and import it, then check the products. Customers, reviews and past orders are separate, optional steps, and the store is set up and test orders placed before the domain is connected. (Shopify Help Center)

  • Shopify can import URL redirects from a CSV file, so old addresses can be mapped to new ones in bulk. (Shopify Help Center)

What we plan

The review comes first. The written proposal then states the scope, price and timeline.

  1. 1.Review

We compare the products, page types, forms and integrations on your Squarespace store with what Shopify offers, and list anything that needs an app or custom work.

  2. 2.Rebuild

The storefront is rebuilt as a Shopify theme. Content pages such as About, FAQ and policies are carried across and checked.

  3. 3.Content and data

Products come from the CSV export, mapped to Shopify's product fields, then variants, images, prices and stock are checked against the live store. Any product types the export leaves out, along with customers, past orders and reviews, are planned in the review: moved, kept as records, or left behind.

  4. 4.Redirects

Product, category and page addresses are mapped to their Shopify addresses and loaded as redirects before launch.

  5. 5.Test, then switch

Checkout, shipping settings, order emails and tracking are tested on the new store before the domain moves, then checked again after.

Have these ready when you ask

Rough answers are fine. Please don't send passwords through the form.

  • Your store address.
  • Roughly how many products and variants you sell, and which kinds: physical, service, digital, gift cards or subscriptions.
  • The apps and services connected to the store, such as shipping, email or accounting.
  • Whether past orders and customer accounts need to be on Shopify.

After the move

Shopify runs the store and checkout. Theme changes, apps and new products still need an owner after launch. See Shopify development
