Magento to Shopify migration
Moving from Magento to Shopify means rebuilding the storefront, replacing extensions one by one, and moving product, customer and stock data you have checked. Here is when it is worth it and what we plan.
When staying on Magento makes sense
If any of these sound like you, fixes or a redesign on Magento may be the cheaper step.
- Your store depends on custom modules, B2B rules or checkout logic you haven't confirmed Shopify can handle.
- A developer already keeps Magento updated and secure, and you know what that costs.
- The move would mean rebuilding most of your pricing or catalog logic for little gain.
- The switch would land in your busiest season.
What Magento and Shopify allow
From each platform's own help pages, linked beside each point.
The Adobe Commerce (Magento) admin can export product, customer and stock data. An export file is a starting point; it doesn't mean customer passwords, orders or extensions move on their own. (Adobe Experience League)
Shopify's migration guidance is to map products, variants, images and inventory to Shopify and then check them, to treat customers, orders and reviews as separate pieces of work, and to test the store before the domain moves. (Shopify Help Center)
Shopify can import URL redirects from a CSV file, so old addresses can be mapped to new ones in bulk. (Shopify Help Center)
What we plan
The review comes first. The written proposal then states the scope, price and timeline.
1.Review
We list the extensions, custom code, integrations and pricing rules the store relies on, and decide with you which become Shopify apps, Shopify settings, custom work, or nothing.
2.Rebuild
The storefront is rebuilt as a Shopify theme. Magento themes and extensions don't carry over.
3.Content and data
Products, customers and stock come from Magento's export files, mapped to Shopify and checked. Orders, reviews and how customers sign in after the move are planned separately. Don't assume passwords come across.
4.Redirects
Product, category and content page addresses are mapped to their Shopify addresses and loaded as redirects before launch.
5.Test, then switch
Checkout, shipping settings, order emails, integrations and tracking are tested on the new store before the domain moves, then checked again after.
Have these ready when you ask
Rough answers are fine. Please don't send passwords through the form.
- Your store address, and where Magento is hosted.
- The extensions and integrations you rely on, such as ERP, inventory, accounting or shipping.
- Roughly how many products, variants and customer accounts you have.
- Any customer-group pricing, B2B rules or custom checkout steps.
- Whether past orders need to be on Shopify or kept as records.
After the move
Shopify runs the store and checkout. Theme changes, apps and integrations still need an owner after launch. See Shopify development
